Astrology 101

What is Astrology?

Astrology is the belief system that suggests the positions and movements of celestial bodies—such as the stars, planets, the Sun, and the Moon—can influence or reflect events on Earth, particularly in relation to human behavior and personality.

Why Astrology?

Why do so many people—across cultures and centuries—continue to engage with something that's not scientifically proven?

1. A Tool to Understand Ourselves Better

Astrology offers a language for self-reflection. It gives people frameworks (like Sun signs, Moon signs, etc.) to explore questions like:

  • Why am I like this?

  • Why do I keep repeating certain patterns?

  • What kind of people am I drawn to?

Even if it’s symbolic or metaphorical, astrology gives form to the complex, messy experience of being human.

2. Feeling Connected to Something Bigger

Looking up at the stars and planets has always been a human instinct. Astrology taps into this desire to feel part of a greater cosmic order—especially in a world that often feels random or chaotic.

3. Look for Patterns for Explanation of Life Problems

Astrology provides predictable structures (e.g., Mercury retrograde = communication glitches), which can offer emotional comfort or a way to frame uncertainty:

  • Life feels chaotic → “It’s the full moon” ?

  • Something goes wrong → “Mercury is in retrograde” ?

These explanations may not be scientific, but they help people make meaning out of difficult situations.

What are Retrogrades?

In astrology, a retrograde occurs when a planet appears to move backward in its orbit as viewed from Earth. This is actually an optical illusion caused by the different orbital speeds of Earth and the other planets - similar to how a faster-moving car can make a slower car appear to move backward when you pass it.

Astrologically, retrograde periods are believed to influence the areas of life that each planet governs, typically causing delays, miscommunications, or a need to revisit and revise things. Here's what each major planetary retrograde is thought to affect:

For example, Mercury Retrograde (which happens 3-4 times per year) is the most well-known and is associated with communication breakdowns, technology glitches, travel delays, and misunderstandings. People often avoid signing contracts or making major decisions during these periods.
